Noise Gate – The noise gate is a simplified version of the expander.Limiters are used to limit audio from peaking above 0dB. Limiter – Limiters are a specialized type of compressor that is designed to be used at the end of an audio processing chain.Invert Polarity – Only used to help with phase cancellation issues which is an audio phenomenon that reduces the audio’s overall strength. If possible, the gain should be adjusted before it is captured into OBS to avoid unwanted noise. Gain – Gain can be used to increase the volume of a source. Therefore, the expander has similar features such as a Threshold, Attack, and Release. The expander works similar to a compressor but on low-level noise. Expander – An expander can be used to remove unwanted background noise by setting a low-level threshold for audio that you want to be removed. For example, you can apply a sidechain compressor to a background music track to automatically reduce volume when you are speaking through a microphone. Sidechain Compression (aka Ducking) – Sidechain compression can be used to automatically adjust the volume of an audio source to make room in the audio mix for another audio source such as a microphone input. An Output Gain can be used to increase the overall volume after the compression effect. The Attack and Release settings allow you to adjust how quickly the compressor effect will ramp in and out when the Threshold is reached. The Compressor includes a Threshold setting you can use to set the audio level at which the compressor should start working. The main compressor adjustment is called Ratio and the higher the ratio the more compression will be used to reduce the loudness of audio when peaking. Compressors allow you to limit audio peaking beyond 0dB by making loud noises quieter when they peak. Compressor – The compressor can be used to make any audio source sound more full. Here is a list of default OBS audio filters This is because the order in which you use each filter will affect the sound that you get in the end. When you are working with audio filters it’s important to remember that audio device filters can be used in a chain. Sending from our Talkback Key track to the new channels 3 and 4 of our Talkback Mic track.Ĭreate an auto‑ducking talkback facility using Reaper’s ReaGate plug‑in.Audio filters are designed to enhance audio inputs in OBS. One thing I missed when I first moved from a hardware console to a software‑based setup was the ‘push‑to‑talk’ talkback feature. It’s super handy when you’re recording performers in other rooms - you just press the button and it mutes the monitor mix and activates your talkback mic so you can communicate with the artists. Release again and your mic is muted, with the monitor mix restored. There are monitor controllers and audio interfaces that offer this functionality, but as computers have grown more powerful and system latency has diminished more and more people are constructing their monitor mixes entirely in their DAW software. #AUTOMUTE REAPER HOW TO#In this column, I’ll explain how to set up a push‑to‑talk function using Reaper’s in‑built tools, and suggest a couple of nifty variations. In the process, we’ll use Reaper’s flexible routing and the side‑chain capability of the ReaGate plug‑in. (The purpose of each will become clearer as we proceed.) This rig involves four tracks: a mic input a monitor submix track a main monitor bus and a ‘key’ track, which we’ll use to toggle the talkback on/off. Create a new track called ‘Talkback Mic’ and set the input to whichever hardware channel you’ve plugged your mic into. Hit the track’s record‑arm button and you should see the meters move when you speak. Next, right‑click the record‑arm button and select ‘Record: disable (input monitoring only)’, then click to engage Record Monitoring. ![]()
